This summer I was invited to create a series of barn paintings for the historic Pioneer Gallery at the Smithy Art Center in Cooperstown, NY.
The barns I chose to depict all have a strong design, a unique character, and are beautifully situated in the landscape. Driving the country roads of New York State, over the years, I’ve admired these human expressions rising up out of the landscape. Sometimes they stand out like beacons on the horizon, nestle into the surroundings, or both.
A sketchy paint treatment, revealing the layers from tonal to opaque strokes is a way to echo the barn’s simultaneous unification with and emergence from its environment.
I’m honored to show my paintings along side the stunning portraits of Lordan Bunch. The show will be on view August 18th through September 21st with an opening reception on August 18th from 5-8 pm.
